Belt and disk sander safety advice for construction workers

Virtually every piece of machinery you use at a construction site comes with risks that could cause you to suffer an injury. Belt and disk sanders are no different. Some of the most common complaints related to these devices involve serious skin burns.

Let’s take a look at some important tips that all users of belt and disk sanders can employ to ensure that they do not get hurt on the job:

  • Wear safety glasses or goggles at all times when using sanders and make sure they have side shields.
  • Keep your work area clean and free of debris.
  • Connect a dust extracting system to your sander. This dust can be hazardous to your health.
  • Make sure fire extinguishers are nearby in case friction results in a fire.
  • Test the sanding belt before use to ensure it’s tracking in proper alignment.
  • When using disc sanders, the side of the disk that goes downward is the only side you should use.
  • Use a strong and sturdy table to support what you’re working on.
  • Check for a torn sandpaper disk or a torn belt before using the sander.
  • Never wear loose clothing, jewelry or neckties when operating a sander. Also tie back your long hair so it’s out of the way.
  • Use clamps to secure the piece you’re working on when possible.

There is no way to guarantee that you won’t get hurt when using a piece of construction equipment, but practicing safe working procedures will dramatically reduce the chances of getting hurt. If you do get hurt on the job, regardless whose fault it was, you may want to consider talking workers’ compensation lawyer.
